International: Baby Trafficking, Georgia, Russia

Summary

  • For decades, newborn babies were taken from their mothers in Georgia and sold for illegal adoption in other countries.
  • One of the thousands of children who were taken, Tamuna Museridze has since become an activist helping to reunite families using DNA tests.
  • Despite Museridze's efforts to expose the practices of corrupt doctors and officials, the government of Georgia still refuses to systematically address the issue.

The reality is more confusing. This is also true for Switzerland.

In a report from 2023, the Federal Council admitted that there had been «irregularities» and «abuses» in adoptions from 10 countries of origin, including Sri Lanka, Romania and Chile.  Too much attention was paid to the needs of the adoptive parents and too little to the situation in the countries of origin, the government stated.
