"It is strictly believed and understood by the Sioux that a child is the greatest gift from Wakan Tanka, in response to many devout prayers, sacrifices, and promises. Therefore, the child is considered 'sent by Wakan Tanka,' through some element - namely the element of human nature." -Robert Higheagle
Children are sacred to parents everywhere. What makes the Lakota people any different? What gives the South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) the right to strip Lakota children from their families and communities to place them in non-native homes?
The South Dakota DSS has knowingly and willfully violated the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) since at least 2001. In 2012, native children were placed in foster care at a rate of 3.9 times their representation. Based on these statistics, there are many broken Lakota families that should now be reunited.
