In Patricia's case, in reunion with Oprah and openly shown on national television, Patricia had to find relatives because her mother Vernita was not ready. That is the whole point - some of us adoptees will need to meet siblings and other relatives first - but we can't with sealed records and archaic laws.
We need unconditional open records laws to be passed NOW and stop the parental consent clauses! Since Vernita said no contact, Patricia could have been lost forever to Oprah and to their family. Finding your natural family should not be so hard. It is inhumane the way it is now.
Oprah did a great thing "exposing closed adoptions" like her own sisters to perhaps millions of viewers.
Patricia is my hero!
